Kickstarting a Data Strategy at Avanti West Coast

Reframed a major platform decision before it was locked in

DATA STRATEGY WORKSHOP · FULL DAY, ON-SITE

How a structured on-site workshop gave Avanti’s Data and BI Team the clarity, direction, and foundations they needed to move from a reactive function to a strategic one.

The Challenge

No data strategy existed — the team operated ad hoc with siloed, self-service dashboards and no agreed goals. Uncontrolled self-service was driving up Azure costs with no visibility of spend. Business engagement was entirely reactive, with no data owners, no roadmaps, and no demand management process to prioritise work.

What Enably Did

We designed and ran a full-day, on-site workshop with Avanti’s BI leadership team, structured around five workstreams — data strategy, business engagement, team identity, process, and technology. Rather than arriving with a pre-formed view, we surfaced the realities inside the team and used that as the basis for a clear, honest assessment. One key reframe: a planned move to Microsoft Fabric was paused once it became clear that a technology change without strategic foundations in place wouldn’t solve the underlying problems.

The Outcome

  • A shared, honest assessment of the team’s maturity across all five workstreams, agreed by the room
  • A reframed technology conversation — from “should we move to Fabric now” to “what foundations do we need first”
  • A framework for business engagement: quarterly functional reviews, a Data Steering Group, and named data ownership by function
  • A clear, prioritised set of next steps for both Enably and Avanti to own

“Engagement with Enably provided great insights into the strategic
approach and position of our Data/BI function. The breadth of
knowledge and experience of the Enably team helped provide many
strategic light-bulb moments during the workshops.”
